Consumer sentiment inched up for the fourth consecutive month in November, reaching its highest level since April 2024, according to the latest consumer survey from the University of Michigan. Despite these declines, sentiment for Republicans remains well above 2022 and 2023 levels. Consumers of all three political groups expressed agreement that the future trajectory of the economy is contingent on the outcomes of the election later this year. The University of Michigan just released its revised Consumer sentiment data for the month of November, which came in below expectations at 71.8 (street expecting 74.0). Sentiment appears to be building some momentum as consumers’ expectations for the economy brighten, she said. “All year, consumers have repeatedly told us that the trajectory of the economy hinges on who becomes the next president,” Hsu said.
Less than one-third of consumers expect unemployment rates to rise in the year ahead, compared with 41% a year ago. About 38% of consumers blamed high prices for eroding their living standards, up from 33% last month. The minimum monthly change required for significance at the 95% level in the Sentiment Index is 4.8 points; for the Current and Expectations Index, the minimum is 6 points. History shows that consumer confidence has been at its lowest point just prior to and in the midst of recessionary periods.
About 41% of consumers expect good times in the year ahead for business conditions, while 48% expect bad times. In contrast, in June 2022, 79% of consumers expected challenging times ahead for the economy. In November, more consumers said they felt good about their personal finances and expected more income gains in the coming year. Still, 44% of those surveyed said high prices are eroding their standard of living. Overall, consumers perceived few developments, positive or negative, in the state of the economy since the start of the new year. When consumer confidence increases, certain sectors tend to benefit sooner than others.

The repeat surveys help reveal the changes in consumer sentiment over time and provide a more accurate measure of consumer confidence.

A closely watched monthly gauge of consumer sentiment published by the University of Michigan last week moved upward to its highest reading since April. For homebuying conditions, concerns over high interest rates fell to its lowest reading in 15 months. However, even after this recent decline, a majority of consumers still believe that high interest rates are weighing down homebuying conditions. The share of consumers spontaneously mentioning the negative effect of high interest rates or tight credit on buying conditions for large purchases fell this month. “While there are some signs that consumers perceive a slight deterioration in labor market conditions, they do not expect substantial effects on the economy,” Hsu said.
